Australia calls on G20 for end to 'wet' markets selling wildlife

Australia has called on G20 nations to bring an end to "wet" markets selling wildlife over concerns they pose a threat to human health and agriculture, in a move which could further strain ties with China as Canberra repeated calls for an international inquiry into the coronavirus pandemic.

The outbreak is thought to have started in a wet market in Wuhan in central China that was also selling illegal wildlife. Wet markets are a key part of daily life not only in China but across Asia. They trade in fresh vegetables, meat and fish and most do not sell wildlife.

Australia's coronavirus mortality rate 100 times lower than France, the UK, Prime Minister says

Australia's coronavirus mortality is lower than some countries with half our population, the Prime Minister has said.

As of Thursday morning, Scott Morrison said Australia had recorded 75 deaths from COVID-19.

He said while the number of deaths locally was "never good", compared to other countries it fared well.

"As sad as that is for those families, let's not forget that in countries that are smaller than Australia, like Belgium, 6,262 people have died," Mr Morrison said.

"In The Netherlands, 4,678 have died, in Sweden, 8,137 people have died."

According to the government data from each country, Belgium has a population of 11.4 million people, The Netherlands 17.3 million and Sweden 10.3 million — compared to Australia's population of around 25.6 million people.

Australian travel companies must honour refund policies, consumer watchdog says

Australia’s consumer watchdog has warned the travel sector it must honour the refund policies that existed at the time of bookings, after widespread complaints that operators were creating new conditions and applying them retrospectively during the Covid-19 crisis.

The pandemic has placed the travel sector in a deeply difficult position, forcing widespread cancellations and throwing businesses into financial turmoil.

As they fight to survive, key players in the Australian market have drawn the anger of customers by suddenly changing their refund policy and applying it to previous bookings to withhold refunds.

'Left with nothing': Australia's migrant workforce face destitution without coronavirus safety net

In a week, Popi’s household of full employment went to a bare six hours a week. Four foreign nationals on temporary work visas, they watched in disbelief as, in turn, they endured layoff after layoff after layoff.

As the Australian government has swung into action to counter the economic chaos of the coronavirus pandemic, outlaying public money to support businesses and a new jobkeeper wage subsidy to keep money in the pockets of employees laid off, Australia’s million-strong migrant workforce has been conspicuously absent.
